Many building needs some form of façade access whether it’s for window cleaning, cladding maintenance, joint and masonry inspection or signage maintenance.
With numerous forms of façade access available, it’s important to identify which façade access system you have and select the right testing and inspection methods. As with any form of working at height equipment it is the duty holder’s responsibility to ensure that, prior to use, equipment provided is inspected by a competent person. The Working at Height Regulations (WAHR) 2005 states ‘Every employer shall ensure that, where the safety of work equipment depends on how it is installed or assembled, it is not used after installation or assembly in any position unless it has been inspected in that position.’
Abseil and Rope Access equipment for Façade Access such as Monorails, Anchor Points, Eyebolts & Davit Arms are all forms of fall protection and façade access; which should be inspected at least every 6 months. It is also stated in the WAHR; ‘Where work is carried out at height, every employer shall take suitable and sufficient measures to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, any person falling a distance liable to cause personal injury’ which is why it is so important that all testing, inspection and certification of Façade Access Systems such as Monorails, Anchor Points, Davit Arm systems are carried out in accordance with current British Standards; BS EN 795, BS 7883, BS EN 795, LOLER 1998, BS6037 & PUWER 1998.
Site managers and business owners have a legal obligation to ensure safety equipment is inspected and recertified at least annually under the Safety, Health and Welfare Act at Work Regulation 2007 Part 4: Work at Height.
